Russian General Staff denies bombings against Aleppo civilian targets

The General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces on Thursday denied having targeted Syrian civilians in bombings.

General Sergei Rudskoy said in a televised statement that Russian aviation focused solely on specific targets that were carefully selected in advance and were never in or around Aleppo and residential areas.

Following several accusations that Russia had killed hundreds in Aleppo, the general said they never hit weddings nor funeral processions.

He said there were no documents nor evidence proving that Russia attacked residential areas in Aleppo and lamented that the United States-led coalition had not fought actively against terror in Syria and Iraq.

He insisted that the air force ignored objectives that were near hospitals, schools, markets and mosques and that only people who were proven to be members of the Islamic State or Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (the formerly al-Qaeda affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra) were targeted.

In two statements, the volunteer search and rescue organization known as the White Helmets said at least 81 people were killed Wednesday and another 41 Tuesday in rebel-held eastern Aleppo currently besieged by the Syrian government.

Another 87 were injured in the dozens of aerial strike that were carried out.

British monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the White Helmets and other NGOs and groups frequently denounce Russian airstrikes in Syria against civilians.
