Spain's King to meet political leaders ahead of last attempt to elect PM

Spanish King Felipe VI is to meet with political party leaders on Oct. 24-25 to discuss the available options in Spain's attempt to form a government, the King's office said on Tuesday.

According to Constitutional law, if a new government cannot be formed before Oct. 31, the scheduled final day for the upcoming investiture debates in Congress, the voting public will be sent back to the polls for the third time in a year.

The meeting was confirmed after the Spanish head of state met with President of Congress Ana Pastor.

Spain's re-election attempt on June 26 failed to alter the hung-parliament result in the Dec. 20, 2015 general election.

Two attempts at seeking parliamentary support for an investiture as prime minister firstly by former Socialist Party leader Pedro Sanchez in Mar. and then center-right Popular Party leader Mariano Rajoy in Sept. also failed to bear fruit.

Sanchez received the backing of 131 parliamentary votes out of 350 seats in the lower house of Parliament, while Rajoy secured 170.

The conversation with the King may lead to a proposal of leadership if the monarch deems that there is a candidate ready for the role, however this is not guaranteed.

The only option on the table at the moment is another investiture attempt by acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy.
