Israel rejects French proposal to host Palestinian-Israeli peace talks

Israel rejected on Monday to participate in an international peace summit proposed by France, asking Paris to refrain from promoting the conference, two high ranking Israeli officials told a French EU special envoy currently on a visit to Jerusalem.

"A (peace) agreement will only come through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestine National Authority (PNA)" was the message the interim Head of the Israeli Security Council, Jacob Nagel, and the Israeli prime minister's adviser, Isaac Moljo, had for EU Special Envoy Pierre Vimont, according to a statement issued by the Office of the Israeli Prime Minster, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Israel expects France "not to promote a conference or a process that is contrary to (our) official position," the statement read.

The statement stressed "Any other initiative, including this one, will only distance peace from the region," adding that "an international conference would also give Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas a platform on which to grandstand, rather than engaging directly with the Israelis."

The EU special envoy was in Jerusalem to discuss the French peace initiative proposal, which includes the organization of an international forum before the end of the year.

Israel rejects an international solution to the conflict and defends bilateral talks where no third party is involved.

However, the Palestinians consider that the bilateral negotiation approach has been exhausted and according to them the only solution that guarantees the solving of all disputes and the establishment of a Palestinian state can come from the International Community.
