Russian scientists develop system for monitoring space junk

Scientists from St. Petersburg Polytechnic University have developed a monitor system to follow space junk.

The system is a set of monitoring meters intended for a spaceship to ensure its safety if established on board, Rector of the St. Petersburg university Andrei Rudskoi told TASS on Thursday.

The space litter monitoring project aroused interest at the Russian Space Agency (Roscosmos). Chief of the Roscosmos agency Oleg Ostapenko has promised support to St. Petersburg Polytechnic University to enable it to test the litter monitoring meters on the orbit.

Space debris to be removed from Earth's orbit

Kerry Nock of Global Aerospace Corporation stated that the problem of space debris is becoming increasingly more acute every year. He said that recently one of our orbiting satellites was put out of order, and may happen again. He suggested that once nothing can be done about the debris, we should at least try to reduce its amount by removing broken equipment from the orbit.
Now debris mean mainly fragments of various satellites that no longer serve any useful purpose, but may damage the operating units, and in some cases threaten nuclear or toxic contamination when they fall on Earth.
According to the report published in October of 2009 by the UN Office for Outer Space Affairs, approximately 300,000 such objects revolve around our planet.

Το πρόβλημα της υπερπλήρωσης του διαστημικού χώρου από κάθε λογής απόβλητα βρίσκεται και πάλι στο επίκεντρο της προσοχής. Αφορμή γι'αυτό αποτέλεσαν οι κυριακάτικες δοκιμές αντιπυραυλικών συστημάτων από την Κίνα και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες.

Αυτές οι δοκιμές συνήθως αφήνουν πολλά θραύσματα. Πολλοί εμπειρογνώμονες λένε ότι οικονομικά αποτελεσματικοί τρόποι για την εκκαθάριση του περίγειου χώρου ως σήμερα δεν υπάρχουν.

Οι αντιπυραυλικές δοκιμές αποτελούν μόνο ένα από τις πηγές διαστημικών σκουπιδιών. Αυξάνεται ο αριθμός των διαστημικών εκτοξεύσεων: η λύση πολλών προβλημάτων της οικονομίας, της άμυνας ή της επικοινωνίας είναι αδιανόητη χωρίς τους δορυφόρους. Μετά από ορισμένο βαθμό φθοράς, οι δορυφόροι παραμένουν σε τροχιά, όπως και τα τμήματα των πυραύλων.
