Erdogan: Dutch acting like Nazi remnants and fascists after FM flight block

The Turkish president on Saturday said the Dutch were acting like Nazi remnants and fascists after the government of the Netherlands denied landing permission for a plane carrying the Turkish foreign minister.

The move prevented Mevlut Cavusoglu from attending a referendum campaign rally in Rotterdam.

In a speech delivered in Istanbul, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan asked how Dutch diplomatic flights would be able to come to Turkey after the move, according to NTV channel.

The Dutch government on Saturday denied a landing permit for the plane of Turkey's foreign minister over public order and security concerns.

A Dutch government statement said that it had tried to find an alternative solution with the Turkish authorities but in the end was left with no other option than preventing Cavusoglu's plane from landing.

The move opened a new chapter in diplomatic tensions between the two NATO members surrounding the referendum being pushed by Erdogan that would pave the way to reforming the constitution and transform Turkey into a presidential republic.

Erdogan recently accused Germany of Nazism in connection with a controversy over a Turkish minister's rally in that European country ahead of the referendum.

Cavusoglu had said earlier on Saturday that if the Dutch authorities refused him permission to fly into Rotterdam, his country would respond with harsh sanctions.
