Egypt set to receive wounded Palestinians via border crossing (Rafah crossing point)

Egypt opened its Rafah crossing point bordering the Palestinian Gaza Strip on Thursday to receive wounded Palestinians by Israeli air strikes, a security official at the crossing told Xinhua.

More than 45 Egyptians who were stuck at the border after the Israeli air strike on Gaza along with the injured Palestinians were expected to arrive, but still no one showed up fearing the strike, added the official on condition of anonymity.
Arish hospitals in north Sinai have been placed on alert with all necessary equipment and blood donation to cure the Palestinians, Adel Adawi, Egyptian Health Minister said in a statement.

Egypt: UN rights experts denounce mass death sentences as ‘mockery of justice’

UN, 31 March 2014 – A group of eight United Nations human rights independent experts today urged the Egyptian authorities to quash the 529 death sentences announced in Egypt last week and give the defendants new and fair trials, in line with international human rights law.
“The right to life is a fundamental right, not a toy to be played with. If the death penalty is to be used at all in countries which have not abolished it, international law requires the most stringent respect of a number of fundamental standards,” the experts said in a news statement.

UN human rights office deeply alarmed at mass imposition of death penalty in Egypt

UN, 25 March 2014 – The United Nations human rights office said today it is deeply alarmed by the imposition of the death penalty against 529 people in Egypt on Monday after a “cursory” mass trial in which the majority of defendants were not present in court.
“The astounding number of people sentenced to death in this case is unprecedented in recent history,” Rupert Colville, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), told a news conference in Geneva.
“The mass imposition of the death penalty after a trial that was rife with procedural irregularities is in breach of international human rights law.”

La crise entre l'Egypte et la Turquie, née avec la destitution du président islamiste Mohamed Morsi et la répression de ses partisans, s'est aggravée samedi, Le Caire expulsant l'ambassadeur de Turquie en réduisant sa représentation diplomatique et Ankara appliquant la "réciprocité".

Il s'agit de la mesure diplomatique la plus drastique prise par l'Egypte face aux critiques qui se sont élevées à l'étranger contre la répression menée par les autorités installées par l'armée. Celle-ci a fait plus d'un millier de morts, en majorité des manifestants pro-Morsi, et conduit à plusieurs milliers d'arrestations.
Le Premier ministre turc Recep Tayip Erdogan, proche de la confrérie des Frères musulmans à laquelle appartient M. Morsi, avait qualifié sa destitution le 3 juillet par l'armée de "coup d'Etat". Depuis la dispersion le 14 août dans un bain de sang de manifestants pro-Morsi, il a multiplié les condamnations, évoquant un "très grave massacre" de manifestants "pacifiques".

A state of emergency has been declared across Egypt, according to a presidential statement announced on state television.
The state of emergency will begin at 4pm local time (14:00 GMT) and will last for a month, the statement said on Wednesday afternoon.
The exceptional measures came as "the security and order of the nation face danger due to deliberate sabotage, and attacks on public and private buildings and the loss of life by extremist groups," the presidency said.

Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has declared a 30-day state of emergency and a night-time curfew in three cities along the Suez Canal that have seen deadly clashes in recent days. 
In a televised address late on Sunday, Morsi said the emergency measures in Port Said, Ismailia and Suez would take effect on Monday from 9pm local time (1900 GMT) to 6am (0400 GMT), warning to take more action to stem the latest eruption of violence across much of the country.
