UN, 22 May 2014 – Despite repeated appeals by senior United Nations officials for accountability for crimes being committed in Syria, the Security Council was unable today to adopt a resolution that would have referred the situation in the war-torn nation to the International Criminal Court (ICC), due to vetoes by permanent members Russia and China.
The resolution, which was backed by the other 13 members of the Council, would have given the Court the mandate to investigate the horrific crimes committed during the course of the conflict in Syria, which since March 2011 has witnessed the deaths of over 100,000 civilians, the displacement of millions and widespread violations of human rights.

The United States has indicted five Chinese military officials with
cyber espionage charges for allegedly hacking into US companies to gain
trade secrets, the Justice Department has said, publicly accusing China
of cyber spying for the first time.
The department said on Monday that the hackers targeted US companies
in the nuclear power, metals and solar products industries to steal
information useful to competitors in China. The charges are the
first-of-its-kind against state actors by the US.
NAYPYITAW, BURMA — Escalating tensions in the South China Sea are expected to be among the main points of discussion Saturday at the annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in Burma, also known as Myanmar.
Burma, which is hosting the summit for the first time, has tightened security in the capital of Naypyitaw as it prepares to welcome regional leaders beginning Saturday.
Presidential spokesman Ye Htut said Burma wants the summit to focus on reducing tensions through existing agreements.
"We have already had ASEAN's statement called 'Declaration on South China Sea.' We will try to discuss this issue peacefully and avoid using force," he said. "[Burma], as a member of the ASEAN, will continue to follow this rule."
China on Tuesday condemned Britain for interfering in its domestic
affairs, in response to a human rights report, a day after the British
government said Beijing had called off human rights talks.
Chinese
foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying accused Britain of issuing
the report with "irresponsible remarks made about the Chinese political
system, rudely slandering and criticizing China's human rights
situation."
UN, 15 March 2014 – Owing to the negative vote of one of its permanent
members, the United Nations Security Council today failed to adopt a
draft resolution which urged countries not to recognize the results of
this weekend's referendum in Crimea.
Thirteen of the Council's 15 members voted in favour of the draft text,
Russia voted against, and China abstained. A veto by any of the
Council's five permanent members – China, France, Russia, the United
Kingdom and the United States – means a resolution cannot be adopted.

There is rising concern in Spain over
a diplomatic and economic backlash from China, after a criminal court
in Madrid called for the arrest of five former Chinese leaders for their
role in alleged crimes of genocide in Tibet.
The ruling, handed down last week, is aimed at Jiang Zemin, the
former Chinese president, Li Peng, the former prime minister, and three
other high-ranking ex-officials. The men are said to have held
“political or military responsibility” in periods when the Chinese
authorities are alleged to have committed human rights abuses against
the Tibetan population.
China's defense ministry has released an air defense zone map for the
East China Sea that includes islands controlled by Japan, but claimed by
China.
In a statement on its website Saturday, the ministry said
that under a new set of rules, all aircraft entering the zone must
notify Chinese authorities and are subject to emergency military
measures if they do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing.
The statement said the rules went into effect on Saturday.
There
was no immediate response from Japan, but earlier this month, Japan
scrambled fighter jets in the East China Sea after it spotted what it
said was an unmanned aircraft flying toward Japan.
China is stepping up pressure on Japan in a long-running maritime
dispute, deploying Chinese vessels near contested East China Sea islands
and accusing Japanese leaders of making provocative statements.Japan
said four Chinese coast guard patrol ships entered the disputed waters
on Monday morning, prompting Japanese authorities to warn the vessels to
leave the area, which they did a short time later. Chinese
ships have sailed near the islets on dozens of occasions in the past
year. Such incidents typically end within several hours, with the
Chinese vessels leaving the area after trading warnings and sovereignty
claims with the Japanese.
Region.
YOKOHAMA - Japan today (Aug 6) unveiled its biggest warship since
World War II, a huge flat-top destroyer that has raised eyebrows in
China and elsewhere because it bears a strong resemblance to a
conventional aircraft carrier.
The ship, which has a flight deck
that is nearly 250 metres long, is designed to carry up to 14
helicopters. Japanese officials say it will be used in national defence -
particularly in anti-submarine warfare and border-area surveillance
missions - and to bolster the nation’s ability to transport personnel
and supplies in response to large-scale natural disasters, like the
devastating earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

ausschließlich in Entwicklungsländern statt. Nigeria, heute 160

verdoppeln und die USA überholen - mit dramatischen sozialen Folgen.

The mayor of Osaka in Japan has sparked outrage by saying that the
Japanese military’s forced prostitution of Asian women before and during
World War Two was necessary to "maintain discipline" in the army.
Toru
Hashimoto, Mayor of Osaka, said, "Wartime sex slaves were a necessity
to maintain discipline in the Japanese military during those times. If
you want soldiers at war to get some rest, a comfort women system was
necessary. The Abe cabinet, as well as past cabinets, share the same
sentiments."
Toru Hashimoto’s comment triggered anger in Asian
countries that suffered from Japan’s wartime aggression. it comes amid
mounting criticism at the prospect of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s
conservative government revising Japan’s past apologies for wartime
atrocities.
DHARAMSHALA: In view of the ongoing self-immolations in Tibet, MEPs
from the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) will host a
seminar titled “Tears of Tibet” at the European Parliament in Brussels on
Wednesday (10 April). The conference will assess the impacts of Chinese
policies on human rights and the environment in Tibet, and the role of
Europe Union.
“Tensions between the local Tibetans and the Chinese state have
increased since the Tibetan uprising against the Chinese rule in 2008.
Up to now we have unfortunately not seen any significant signs that the
Chinese state is looking to achieve a genuine peace settlement,” ALDE
said. Since 2009, over 114 Tibetans have set themselves on fire in Tibet
calling for freedom for Tibetans and the return of His Holiness the
Dalai Lama to his homeland.
ALDE said the conference aims to review EP action for a peaceful
solution and to discuss how to change the approach/strategy in order to
help the Tibetan people. It expressed its belief that the EU should have
a stronger role in trying to solve the growing tension in Tibet.
ZURICH: Telo Rinpoche, the spiritual leader of the Kalmyk people of
Russian Federation, has said what is happening in Tibet is genocide.
He
said it was unfortunate that world leaders are not doing anything about
the tragic situation in Tibet. Telo Rinpoche was speaking at a
side-event at the UN in Geneva sponsored by five NGOs on “The People’s
Republic of China: Threat to the Survival of Tibetan Buddhism”.
Rinpoche
said that the survival of Tibetan Buddhism affects not only the Tibetan
people but also the world. The preservation of Tibetan Buddhism is also
the survival of Tibetan Buddhist science and philosophy, he said.
A Chinese military frigate locked weapons-targeting radar on a
Japanese navy vessel, Tokyo's defence minister said Tuesday, in an
apparent upping of the stakes in a bitter territorial row.
The move, described by the minister and a Japanese analyst as
"dangerous", marks the first time the two nation's navies have locked
horns in a dispute that has some commentators warning about a possible
armed conflict.
"On January 30, something like fire-control radar was directed at a
Japan Self-Defense Maritime escort ship in the East China Sea," Itsunori
Onodera told reporters in Tokyo.
"The defence ministry today confirmed radar for targeting was used."
Onodera said a Japanese military helicopter was also locked with a
similar radar on January 19. He did not specify whether the helicopter
was airborne or on the deck of a ship at the time.
(Reuters) - Japan's coast guard detained a Chinese fishing
boat near the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Saturday and
arrested the captain for collecting coral illegally, a coast guard
official said.
The vessel was detained off Miyako Island, some 150 km (95 miles) from islands in the East China Sea at the centre of a territorial dispute between the two countries, and about 400 km (250 miles) east of Taipei.
A
long-simmering row over the East China Sea islands, known as the
Senkaku in Japan and the Diaoyu in China, has in recent months escalated
to the point where both sides have scrambled fighter jets while patrol
ships shadow each other in nearby seas.
