US hints at unilateral response to alleged "chemical strike" in Syria

The United States government could decide to respond unilaterally to an alleged chemical weapons attack in Syria if the UN Security Council remains unable to agree on taking action, Washington's envoy said here Wednesday.

"When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action," said Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the UN, in a discussion of the alleged chemical weapons attack on Tuesday that caused more than 70 deaths in the town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Haley was very critical of the protection that Russia is providing to the Syrian regime in the Security Council and urged Moscow to join the rest of the members to halt atrocities in Syria.

"How many more children have to die before Russia cares?" Haley asked, standing during her speech to show the other diplomats photographs of some of the victims of the presumed chemical attack.

"We cannot close our eyes to these pictures, we cannot close our minds to the responsibility to act," she said.
