E. VENIZELOS: Thank you. I am here just to welcome publicly Cathy Ashton and my counterparts from the other European countries, hosting the Gymnich Council, this Informal Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs. It is a great pleasure and a great opportunity for every European Presidency, because of the high level of debates, and I think that will be quite clear from what Cathy Ashton has to say by way of introduction and from our discussion with you.

C. ASHTON: Can I begin by thanking you very much, Deputy Prime Minister and your team, for the excellent organization of this Meeting and this wonderful venue.

La Grèce éclopée prend pour six mois les manettes d'une UE abîmée

La Grèce prend mercredi la présidence de l'UE au cours d'une cérémonie à Athènes en présence de plusieurs dirigeants européens, une étape à la dimension symbolique plus de quatre ans après le début de la crise et à quelques mois des élections européennes.

"C'est une grande responsabilité pour la Grèce d'occuper la présidence de l'UE pendant le semestre qui va mener aux élections de mai", a souligné mercredi le ministre des Affaires étrangères, Evangelos Venizelos, lors d'une rencontre avec la presse.
Les présidents du Conseil européen et de la Commission, Herman Van Rompuy et José Manuel Barroso, ainsi que tous les commissaires européens, font le déplacement dans la capitale grecque et rencontreront dans l'après-midi le gouvernement en place, comme ils le font pour chaque présidence de l'UE.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Venizelos: We want substantial, not just rhetorical, acknowledgement of the sacrifices and great achievements of the Greek people.

JOURNALIST: What stance will you maintain with the troika from here on in?
E. VENIZELOS: On the margins of today’s Meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, and ahead of tomorrow’s meeting between the Greek government and the College of EU Commissioners, I am having a series of meetings in which my message – Greece’s message, the message of the Greek people and our government – is very, very clear: We want substantial, not just rhetorical, acknowledgement of the sacrifices and great achievements of the Greek people.
