NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO does not want confrontation with Russia. On Thursday, June 2, according to TASS.

“On the contrary, we want to establish with Russia a more constructive relationship, — said Stoltenberg at the joint press conference following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. And we keep open the channels for political dialogue. The dialogue all the more important, stronger than friction”.

According to the Secretary General of the Alliance, buildup of NATO forces in Eastern Europe solely for peaceful purposes. “We are strengthening our collective defense is not to provoke conflict, but to prevent it”, — he explained. Stoltenberg stressed that “a new cold war is out of question”.

In February 2016, he announced the intention of the countries-members of the Alliance to expand military presence in Eastern Europe on the border with Russia. “NATO will respond as a United front to any act of aggression towards any of our allies,” he said.

We are talking about the accommodation of six thousand troops of the North Atlantic bloc. This contingent will not be permanent and will undergo rotation. The final decision should be taken on the summit of the countries-members of NATO in the Polish capital in July this year.
